Entrepreneurship. Women. Growth. Fun.
All signs pointed to this
As a kid in the 90s, I studied the words of Sara Blakely, founder of SPANX, on the back of my stepmom’s hosiery. Her red background, philanthropy, growth, elevating women. I read her story on repeat. A mini hustler, I sold anything adults would pay me for. Snow cones, 17-cent strawberries, lemonade, babysitting and CD organization services.
In college, I started a babysitting referral business with my roommate. We joined the student entrepreneur community on campus. We were the only women. Never in my life had I experienced so much confidence and joy.
After college, I fulfilled a childhood dream and moved to Paris. I taught English and worked for an American couple who co-founded a thriving luxury real estate business. What a dream! It was official-official. I took silent vow to one day become an entrepreneur.
When my Paris chapter was over, I was clear. My goal was to find a stepping stone to entrepreneurship. I focused my ambition on learning sales, a skill that I hoped would one day propel my own business.
I spent 13 years as a sales leader at various tech startups. With Groupon, I collaborated with local businesses to create ROI-positive marketing campaigns. I consulted with Fortune 500 companies at 2 software companies. Then I built out the sales infrastructure, operations, and strategy for a startup incubator. All to say — I’ve seen it all in sales. I know what works and what doesn’t.
During those 13 years, did I think about launching that dream business? OH YES!
Every day? Absolutely!
Did I judge myself for not being ready and just starting that damn business? You bet! Relentlessly.
Here's the thing. I wasn't ready.
I had no clue what business I wanted to start. And I had a lot of growing to do.
And I was making a ton of progress during those 13 years (even though I gave myself zero credit for it). I was filling in my gaps. Building my security net. Making progress on other dreams. Accumulating the knowledge, skills, and wisdom that I needed. Shattering the hundreds of misconceptions about entrepreneurship that held me back. (Entrepreneurship is only safe and smart if you... have a huge safety net. Know a ton of entrepreneurs. Have no fear. Have more time. Don't have kids. Are completely sure what you want, etc.)
The truth is. I just wasn't ready.
In 2021, with a 2-year old and 4-month old, I was ready!
Ready for what? I had NO clue! I just knew I had to build something.
During my soul search for the right business (cue tears, isolation, and feeling like a total fraud), I uncovered journal entries from 10 years prior. I wrote about my dream to teach female founders how to grow their business. That was it! Or at least I had to try.
I started with my first client in 2022 and that feeling of pride and joy from college was back.
I just wish I could have turned to my younger self and said, "Stop worrying. One day, you will have your own business. And you're going to love it!”
The best part of this business is that I’m surrounded by women who energize and inspire me. I have so much fun with you! Thank you for being here.
xx,
